This easy hummus recipe with tahini is delicious, creamy, and flavorful. This quick healthy snack is perfect for the kid’s lunchboxes and even at-home snacks. Don’t worry, it’s vegan and vegetarian friendly!
Tahini- You cannot have the perfect hummus without tahini. It is a middle eastern condiment that is made of ground toasted hulled sesame seeds.
Lemon juice- Fresh is best! Squeeze it and add a ling zing to your hummus!
Extra Virgin Olive Oil– Just a little goes a long way. Olive oil helps the hummus have a smooth creamy texture.
Cooked Chickpeas- Chickpeas are the main ingredient in hummus. Sometimes I cook the chickpeas myself but I often grab a can of chickpeas from the grocery store. Make sure you drain your can of chickpeas before adding them to your hummus.
Garlic– I loveeeee garlic! It adds that extra umph of flavor! I like fresh minced garlic or a little garlic powder.
Cumin, Paprika & Cayenne- This adds a little extra flavor! The spice is optional but nothing is wrong with a little flavor.
Sea salt- You can’t forget salt! I love a pinch of sea salt.
Making homemade hummus from scratch is so easy. It only takes a few minutes and you can rest assured that the ingredients are clean and healthier.
Step 1- The base of the perfect smooth hummus recipe is created in the first step. Place the lemon juice and tahini in the food processor for about a minute. When you stop the food processor use a spoon to scrape the edges because the tahini/ lemon mixture gets pushed to the edge.
Step 2– Next I like to add the seasonings; garlic, salt, cumin, and paprika. Sometimes I like to add a pinch of cayenne. My husband lovessss a little spice! After I add the seasonings, I pop the top back on the processor and run it on low for another minute.
Step 3– It’s time to add the chickpeas. Drain the chickpeas and add them to the food processor. Then I put the top back on and turn the food processor on high. I then slowly add the olive oil to the hummus mixture as it’s blending.
Step 4- After letting the processor blend on high for about 1 minute. I stop it and take the top off. Then I use my handy dandy spoon to scrape the sides. This ensures that the ingredients are well integrated.
Step 5- I simply pop the top back on and let it go for another 1 to 2 minutes. Lastly, it’s time to scoop the homemade hummus into a serving bowl. I like to serve it with a little olive oil.
Add some spice- Add some cayenne or smoked chili powder! 1/2 to 1 teaspoon is enough to make a big impact.
Roasted red pepper– I love roasted red pepper. Simply grab a jar of roasted red peppers from the grocery store. Take one pepper and diced it up into small pieces. I like to blend the red peppers up when I blend the spices and lemon/tahini mixture. Then I blend the chickpeas, like normal. Don’t forget to chop a few to top the homemade hummus recipe with.
Mediterranean Hummus- A year ago I went to a restaurant and ordered hummus, but it was served with all these spectacular toppings. Roasted garlic, roasted red peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, and kalamata olives, all served with warm pita chips and a drizzle of evoo.
