Easy Salted Caramel and Chocolate Cupcakes

Sweet. Salty. Fluffy. Creamy. Warm chocolate cupcakes with sweet salted caramel buttercream frosting. I absolutely love this cupcake recipe! The chocolate cupcake is soft, fluffy, and crumbly while topped with sweet swirls of salted caramel frosting.

If you’re in a fancy mood then you can make your own caramel sauce to fold into the salted caramel buttercream. Here is my favorite caramel recipe. If you’re short on time or energy, store-bought caramel sauce is perfect.

I love chocolate cake and I feel like you can never have too much chocolate cake. If you’ve been coming here for a while, then you may remember my original chocolate cake recipe. I used this simple chocolate cake recipe for this delicious recipe as well. It’s perfect, even if I say so myself. It’s a yummy chocolate cake recipe without buttermilk. The cake is moist, soft, and fluffy. I wanted a cake that was flavorful enough to stand up to the sweetness of the salted caramel frosting] and this is it!

The key to a great cake is great flour. I’ve been using Bob’s Red Mill Organic Unbleached White All-Purpose Flour. You don’t need to sift it before you use it and it gives the cake a soft and fluffy texture. Definitely grab a bag while you’re picking up the ingredients for this simple chocolate cake recipe.

Why Add Boiling Water to Chocolate Cake Mix?

The secret to the best chocolate cake is adding boiling water to the batter after you’ve mixed all your ingredients. I’m sure you’re wondering why. Hot water is easily absorbed by the ingredients and it helps to break down the molecules faster by dissolving them.

How to Make Salted Caramel and Chocolate Cake

The steps to making this yummy cake and frosting duo are easy!

  1. In a large mixing bowl, mix sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  2. Add wet ingredients: eggs, milk, oil and vanilla. Mix well.
  3. Add boiling water to batter, carefully.
  4. Pour into the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow them to cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then flip them out on a wire rack and let completely cool before frosting.
  5. Next, we’re on to the salted caramel frosting. Start by whipping the butter until its light and fluffy.
  6. Next add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, salt, and heavy cream.
  7. Lastly, fold in the caramel sauce.
  8. Finally, start frosting those beautiful cupcakes!

Chocolate Cake with Salted Caramel Frosting

Ingredients

Chocolate Cake

  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 2 cups all purpose flour I use Bob's Red Mill
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 large egg room temp
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling hot water

Salted Caramel Buttercream

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 4 cups powdered sugar sifted for smoothness
  • 2 tsp vanilla exract
  • 1/2 cup salted caramel
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tbsp heavy cream

Instructions

  • Line the bottoms with parchment paper.
  • Preheat oven to 300 degrees farienhet
  • Whisk all dry ingredients together in a bowl.
  • Add in the eggs, buttermilk, and vegetable oil. Combine well.
  • Add vanilla.
  • Carefully add hot water. Combine well.
  • Pour even amounts into each pre-prepared pan. Then bake for 30-35 minutes.
  • Once removed from oven, allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10-15 minutes. then remove them from the pan.

Salted Caramel Frosting Instructions

  • Whip softened butter until light and fluffy.
  • Sift powdered sugar while adding it to butter.
  • Add kosher salt, vanilla extract, and heavy whipping cream.
  • Fold in caramel sauce with spatula. Untill all ingredients are well combined.
