Essential Oils for Bug Bites

Hey, ya’ll! I’m so excited that summer is right around the corner! With summer comes many bugs that can bite. That’s why I wanted to talk to you about essential oils for bug bites. Those bites can be itchy, turn red, swell, or even burn. I know this from first-hand experience. My daughter and I seem to attract mosquitoes by the droves. When we get bit, we usually get several at once and they swell and remain itchy for days.

I tried many medicines to relieve the itching and swelling, but nothing seemed to work! I also did not like the ingredients lists on most over-the-counter products. “There must be a better option.” was all that I kept saying. An option that was safe for my toddler but effective.

I saw moms on social media who were using essential oils for an array of problems. This made me feel hopeful that maybe I could find a solution, so I researched! Then BOOM! I ran across all kinds of oils that could help. I’ve since become a full-blown oily mama! In my house, I break out the essential oils for every problem my family has.

I would suggest essentials to any and everyone for everything. It’s not a magic cure and conventional medicine may be more useful at times, but I would suggest giving essential oils a try. I would also suggest doing your own research before purchasing oils. (We’ll talk more about that later on in this article)

Essential Oils for Bug Bites and Their Benefits

Lavender – Lavender was found to have notable anti-inflammatory effects on a cellular level, according to a 2012 study. It also guards against fungal infections and can be used to treat depression, infections, allergies, and eczema.

Eucalyptus – Not only can it be used to keep bugs away, but it can also be used to ease the pain and disinfect the bite.

Tea Tree– Tea tree oil may help prevent bacteria and other microbes from growing in a bug bite. This is wonderful for children who cannot resist the urge to scratch. It is also known to behave like a natural antihistamine.

Peppermint– Peppermint is known to give a cooling sensation when applied to the skin. This will help with the itchy, stinging, and burning feeling of bug bites. There is also research that shows peppermint oil is an antimicrobial, therefore, reducing the risks of infection

Lemon – Lemon essential oil has antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also a favorite oil to fight allergies with. This is great if you’re having above-average reactions to mosquito bites.

Lemongrass – This oil had antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, just a lemon essential oil does. It also will take the sting out of the bites.

German Chamomile – My secret ingredient! It will ease the effects of rashes and eczema.
