Homemade BBQ sauce that is tangy spicy, sweet, and savory, but most important, this bbq sauce will have you licking your fingers and going back for more.
BBQ sauce from scratch isn’t as hard as you may think. Most bbq sauces have ketchup, vinegar, some type of sweeteners such as honey, brown sugar, and/or maple, onion powder, spice Worcestershire sauce, and salt. Depending on the type of bbq, ingredients may change. Every region has their own bbq style and that determines how the sauce tastes.
The key to the best bbq is the best ingredients. I use ketchup as a base but I never use ketchup made with corn syrup! Always get organic ketchup made with real ingredients. I also use apple cider vinegar. Some people don’t like this but I love how the acid balances the sweetness of the brown sugar and maple syrup.
Making your own homemade bbq sauce is super simple!
STEP ONE: Add ketchup, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, and maple syrup to a medium saucepan over medium heat.
STEP TWO: Stir all the ingredients until they are mixed well.
STEP THREE: Add the spices! Onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and smoked paprika. Mix all the ingredients well and cook for 15 minutes over medium-low heat. Make sure to stir the bbq sauce often so that it doesn’t burn. Cook the sauce until it is thick.
